You usually lose money by opening crates and trying to sell whatever you got inside, as opposed to using the key as currency and buying something else, however, some people simply want to find something more than a key in a crate if they have no clear idea on what to do with it, but since you have n alternative plan for said key, probably better to buy those 2 tour of duty tickets and milk the rewards that are also hopefully better than a key since that's also randomized.
