When selecting items in your inventory that you are going to use for bidding on an auction you can click on the item(s) that is/are up for auction and it puts them in your inventory. You can then put them as payment. I didn't test whether or not you can finish a bid with the items because I knew that you can't cancel bids and I didn't want to potentially steal someone's items.
