What Pokemon Sun and Moon did: Right and Wrong

Recommended Posts

Right:

  • Brought back character customization
  • Added a new feature to the game: Z-Moves
  • A new type of concept adventure to an old classic
  • New Pokemon
  • Alolan Forms
  • Improved trading services, such as being able to remove listings for Legendaries for regular Pokemon, ex. Bagon for a Buzzwole, etc.
  • Brought back our original Kanto protagonist and favorite asshole, Asshat!
  • Changed, improved, or added some much more gruesome or darker PokeDex entries, like Bewear's:
Moon This Pokémon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were squashed by its hug.

 Wrong:

  • Wasn't nearly enough Alolan Form Pokemon, only about a little over a dozen  (Exeggcutor, Ninetales, Marowak, Muk, Golem, Dugtrio, and Persian), despite being originally stated there would be dozens of new Alolan Forms
  • No real type balances for new starters, RIP Decidueye and his Ghost/Grass typing
  • Pokemon Snap 2.0 was decent, but could have had a better use within the main story instead of being a pointless side-quest, like being paid 20,000PD if you get over 5,000 "Likes" on a snapshot, per day (My overall highest score for a picture was a perfect angled Mimikyu snapshot, worth exact 19,143 likes)
  • Those two people who introduce you to the Zygarde creation... thing, hardly explain much about anything, and we don't learn anything about them, where they come from, or why they are helping us specifically.
  • Some cameo's in the game were kinda... "lifeless", or at least dull, like for example, why is Grimsley out of ALL of the Elite Four (when Caitlin makes much more sense, if you have thoroughly played White and Black 2, she has a ville (or villa, whatever the f*ck it's called) at a beach town at the edge of the sea), and why he's wearing a Japanese custom-white kimono, etc.
  • Almost half of all the new Pokemon are slower or just slightly faster than Snorlax (no seriously, look up some of the new Pokemon and check their speed stat)
  • A lot of the new Pokemon or Alolan Form typings are 4x weak against common typing moves, like Salazzle and Alolan Golem both 4x weak against Ground, or have pretty godawful typings, that give them too many weaknesses, like Crabominable's Ice/Fighting dual type.
  • Only 300 Pokemon are registered for the Pokedex in order to complete it. While that's good for many players (like me), it kinda puts into perspective how small all the islands are, if they don't have at least 500 registered for the PokeDex.
  • Story was kinda drag-ish, and doesn't get interesting that much until you meet Lusamine, that ahegao tentacle hentai monster-obsessed shitty excuse of a mother that abandoned or disowned her own kids for research after her husband "disappeared" into a life of planting PokeBeans.
  • Our main rival is pretty much a Malasada-obsessed joke of a rival, and they could have made him become more serious about Pokemon, or have Edgelord (the Type:Null guy) become a bigger influence on Hau.
  • NOT ENOUGH LILLIE >:(
  • The overall game isn't difficult that much, since you're given the broken Exp. Share ON THE FIRST F*CKIN ISLAND, NOT EVEN 4 HOURS IN, and the trainer AI are usually equipped with 1-2 Pokemon EACH, instead of the usual 2-4 in previous games.

Overall, the game has its flaws (albeit a LOT), but it was a step in new grounds, a new type of adventure Game Freak and Nintendo were treading on, however for the most part they were financially and publicly successful with the launch of Sun and Moon, selling over 10 million copies within the first week of its release. Though, if they do plan on using this formula again for future games, improve the game difficulty, the rivals overall, and MOAR LILLIE.
